What sorts of things can be sublimated?

A common question we’re often asked is what sorts of things can be sublimated.   The questions can range from “Can I use sublimation on a dark shirt?”  to “Are the mugs people use for sublimation special?” to “I found this piece of barn wood/antique tray/glass bowl,  can I sublimate it?”.  The common theme of all these questions is that people aren’t quite sure what products can be sublimated and which can’t or aren’t suitable,  and they’re looking for some guidance. Basically,  when it comes to determining whether or not something can be sublimated,  it’s about three things:
Thing 1:  Color
As much as we’d all like it to exist,  there is no white ink option for sublimation.   This means there is no way to put a white underbase down.   A white underbase allows for printing of colors on dark shirts,  since the inks actually print on the underbase and not the shirt.    The lack of a white ink option to lay down as an underbase means that sublimation must be done on light colors.   Keep in mind that the ink dyes the fabric when set with heat,  so using any color shirt other than white will change the color of the ink to some degree.
While there is currently no option for direct sublimation, printing the transfer directly on the shirt,  when it comes to dark colors,   there are options for printing a sublimatable material and then transferring that to the shirt.  Our fabric sheets might work in some cases. There are other thinner options for things like t-shirts that can also work.  There are also a few spray coating options out there  that claim to perform the function of a underbase. Do keep in mind,  however,  that these options are more in the nature of a transfer or a carrier and will have a hand and feel different that actual sublimation would.
Thing 2:  Coating
If you’re working with a 100% polyester light-colored t-shirt,  coating doesn’t matter and isn’t needed.  Where coating is vital is when you’re dealing with hard goods. Any hard good, a mug, bag tag, key chain etc.  must be coated with a poly based coating that works with the sublimation ink.  Without this coating the ink will not transfer well and will certainly not be permanent.
There are two options for getting a coated hard good:  
One option is to buy blank items that are already coated,  which means you can simply print your sublimation transfer and proceed to sublimate the item. The other option is to purchase a sublimation coating spray or liquid and coat the item to be sublimated yourself.   While the do it yourself coatings expand the range of items which can be printed through sublimation,  getting the coating on evenly can be tricky.   If the DIY coating drips or is uneven,  then the finished print will have issues as well.
We tend to recommend buying pre-coated items,  simply because we’ve seen how tricky it can be to get the sprays or liquids on evenly. The advantage of a pre-coated item is that it was coated in a factory,  by specialized equipment designed for that job.   While it isn’t always the case,  pre-coated items are more likely to have an even coating and be free of issues that an uneven coating can cause.

Thing 3:  Heat and Pressure
An essential ingredient for sublimation is heat.  Without heat,  the ink won’t sublimate properly and the print won’t transfer.    Anything that is going to be sublimated must be able to stand up to the heat of a heat press or a convection oven,  most likely temperatures somewhere between 350 and 400 degrees.   Anything that would melt or warp at those temperatures is not suitable.   That’s why sublimation isn’t often done on plastic items,  they melt at the temperatures that are required.
Pressure is another essential ingredient in the sublimation process.   When an item,  like a mug,  is sublimated in a convection oven,  the transfer is held to the mug with a wrap. The wrap is usually as silicone band which latches around the item and holds the sublimation transfer securely to it. A heat press,  which works by latching closed around the item and providing heat also applies pressure to the substrate.  Anything that is thin or fragile will not stand up to the pressure involved and may shatter.

What problems do we encounter when sublimation printing?


Sublimation printing uses a full spectrum of vibrant colors to provide durable decorations on a variety of surfaces. While sublimation first became popular for printing on polyester T-shirts, recent advances in sublimation-friendly coatings for other materials have extended this method of transferring sharp and colorful images to wood, metal—and ceramic. With the availability of inexpensive computer systems for digital graphics, sublimation is becoming the easiest and fastest way to make personalized products. But we also have met some problems when dye sublimation printing. 
Color Matching. 
Color is a result of dye penetration into the coating. The amount of penetration can vary with the coating characteristics. A coating with a lower glass transition temperature would be softer at a 400°F sublimation temperature, allowing greater dye penetration and showing darker colors, but some sharpness would also be compromised. Heat and pressure also affect dye penetration, and can be adjusted for the coating. A quality program with color testing is critical to isolating the cause of a color matching problem.
Paper Sticking.
The coating becomes soft when heated. If the coating becomes too soft, either because of excessive heat or a lower glass transition temperature of the coating, the pressure may force the ink, and the paper, into the coating. Upon cooling, the transfer paper will be frozen into the coating and hard to remove. Removal of the sublimation transfer paper while the part is still hot is one way to prevent the sticking, as is reducing the pressure. However, if this problem is experienced as part of a standard testing procedure, where heat, pressure and paper are constant, it could be an indication of coating or equipment problems.
UV Resistance. 
Resistance to sunlight radiation is a function of the coating chemistry. Coating suppliers have developed chemistries that resist UV degradation in other industries, such as outdoor paints and automotive applications. But for sublimation, each coating must be custom-formulated to meet the sublimation decorator’s needs. In some cases, there may be a trade-off—imparting high UV resistance may compromise the coating strength, for example, or may affect another coating property. Developing a UV resistant sublimation coating requires a joint effort from both the sublimation decorator and the supplier.

How to use Epson F2000 DTG printer for cotton t-shirt?

The Epson SureColor F2000 is the easiest, most user-friendly Direct to Garment printer to maintain on the market. One of the biggest advantages of the SC-F2000 is that the maintenance is prompted and preventative. Just follow your maintenance schedule to avoid the catastrophic breakdowns of typical printers. 
To print on a T-shirt using this printer, you need the equipment listed here, depending your print project.
  • Heat press machine
A heat press is required before you can print on a T-shirt. A heat press is used to remove creases from T-shirts, and to fix the pre-treatment solution and ink. Your heat press needs to be larger than your platen and able to sustain a temperature of 338 °F (170 °C) or more for 90 seconds. Check the accuracy of your heat press temperature with a probe; temperatures exceeding 356 °F may result in dull colors. For best results, use a heat press with a foam sheet or mat to allow the steam to escape.
  • Protective release paper sheet
A heat-resistant release sheet is placed over the T-shirt to prevent any pre-treatment solution or ink from sticking to the heat press. 
  • Pure cotton T-shirts 
For best results, use a T-shirt that is 100% cotton with thick and tightly-woven (ringspun) material, and a cotton blend ratio of 100 to 50%. Printing on materials with high polyester content will result in more subdued colors. Since the print quality cannot always be guaranteed for some types of fabric, perform a test print first.
  • Pre-treatment solution (available from Epson)
Pre-treatment solution is necessary for printing White ink (White Edition). If pre-treatment solution is not applied to the T-shirt, White ink does not image correctly or adhere to the T-shirt. Also, colors that are printed on the White ink do not develop properly. For best results, use a paint roller or sprayer to apply pre-treatment solution to the T-shirt.
Note: Pre-treatment solution must be diluted with distilled water at a minimum 1:1 ratio. The amount of water added can vary depending on the material type and color of the garment.
  • Sticky tape or lint roller 
Use sticky tape or a lint roller to remove lint from the print surface of the T-shirt. Take care not to pull fibers up from the T-shirt.
  • Hard roller 
A hard roller is used to press the fibers flat on the print surface of the T-shirt. For best results, use a hard roller that is different from the one you use to apply pre-treatment solution.

Some common reasons cause print head clogging

Some common problems in printers are indicative of print head clogging.  If you are experiencing a decrease in print quality, missing lines or blank pages while trying to print, this may be the issue.  There are many tips on the internet about unclogging the print head.  Such tips range from helpful to detrimental for the printer.  Today, I describe the unclogging process from an ink supplier’s perspective and hope it will be helpful to household users.

The mechanics behind clogging are simple.  The print head is like a water tank with a very tiny opening.  During printing, the machine squeezes out microscopic (picoliter) ink droplets.  The ink is designed to dry fast so as not to smudge. 
These are some possible reasons for clogging:
If the print head is exposed to the air for a long period of time, ink can dry up and block the small opening.
Foreign objects (ink impurity or dust) can block the opening.  Some internet instructions advise users to wipe clean the print head with tissues or paper towels, which may introduce blockage to the print head.  
An air bubble can temporarily block the opening.  Air is naturally dissolved in the ink. 
Fluctuation of room temperature will change the air concentration and thus form air bubbles. 
Changing cartridges also introduces air into the system.  (*Note: This is why you should do a print head-cleaning cycle after installing a new cartridge). 
It may not be a blockage.  There are processes that can permanently damage the nozzle; the print head may be scratched and damaged, the print head may have over-heated during a long printing process, or a paper jam may have caused the issue.

How to clean print heads when clog?

Print head is one of the most expensive part of an inkjet, and the blocking is one of the most harmful problems for a print head. We have talked about why your print head gets blocked last time. Now let’s talk about how to solve the blocking problem of the print head.
1. Clean it with water
For sublimation ink manufacture, the ink must be able to dissolve in the medium in which it is made. So many ink manufactures also produce cleaning solution. But generally speaking, the water performs as well as cleaning solution.
You can use water to dissolve or soften the blockage. Sit the print head in a bowl of water for few hours. Most print heads can be submerged underwater as long as you dry up the contact points before inserting back in the printer.

2. Increase the temperature
Since different substances are made from different atoms, increased temperature will affect their dissolving to different extents.Therefore, you should use hot water when you soak the print head.  The temperature can be somewhere between 90 °F - 120 °F.  
3. Try to push the ink out
Drill a hole on the cartridge and use syringe to push ink downward, then wash the print head under hot running water.

4. The machine
If you think manual cleaning is too troublesome, you can invest a machine to help you. For example, you can buy a steaming machine, it will increases the temperature and the steam which can keep printer head moisturized. Or you can buy a ultrasonic cleaner like the one used in cleaning jewelry or medical equipment, it will help you clean your print heads quickly.
