What are the benefits of dye sublimation printing?
Clothing decorated with dye sublimation is bright, bold, large and colorful. There are no limits and each piece will be as unique as you. Dye sublimation allows us to create any aspect using printed graphics. The printing of color blocks and graphic elements in the clothing reduces the layers of materials traditionally associated with the assembly of a uniform of cheerleaders. This makes our uniforms much more comfortable to use and maximizes the performance of the athlete as it does not restrict movement.

What colors can we use?
With dye sublimation, we can print virtually any color. We use a standard set of printed colors that are common in cheerleading and sports teams, however, if you have a special color that should be combined, we can do it too. We can even print neon colors.

Important facts about dye sublimation
While there are many benefits to the use of dye sublimation, it is important to keep in mind that there are some limitations to this technology. An important limitation to consider with dye sublimation in elastic fabrics is the "white" factor. The dye sublimation process can only use white fabrics to print, so that when the fabric is stretched too much, the color may appear lighter or faded. This is because you see the white fabric shown between the knitting yarn. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the dye sublimation, since the color is stained on the top of the fabric and not completely through the thread. This is much more noticeable when printing a dark color over a larger area.

Why almost dye sublimation done on white substrates?

To understand dye sublimation and to obtain consistently satisfactory results from the process, it is important to understand the technology. In the simplest terms, dye sublimation is a method of transferring a printed image from paper onto a variety of materials, or substrates. There are many types of substrates that can be used, and they include textiles (T-shirts being the most common), ceramics (mugs), glass, plastics (key chains, identification tags, and decorative auto license plates), rubberized polyester (mouse pads, coasters), and coated metal, to name a few. 
Substrate is a term used to describe the base material onto which images are printed. Typical substrates include not only paper (coated and uncoated), but also fabrics, plastics, metal, films and foils. 
The reason why nearly all sublimation is done on white substrates is that dyes are actually transparent when sublimated. Therefore, white is the best background for the full color range to be visible and, most importantly, to exhibit their full vibrancy. Any other background may clash with one or more colors, often rendering them invisible, whereas white actually enhances all colors. For this reason, white substrates for sublimation are widely available and include polyperformance apparel, mesh-ball caps with a polyester front, polyester patches, ceramic plates, photo panels, mugs and tiles, mouse pads, jackets, beverage insulators, polyester calendars, clock faces, doll patches, polyester patches, plastic coasters, key chains and license plates, and coated MDF hard board (used in coasters and clipboards). It is possible to sublimate on substrates that are not white in color as long as the sublimation inks are predominantly darker than the substrate color. For example, black lettering on a red shirt. However, this is not recommended for photographs, logos, or detailed multi-color graphics as many of the image colors will be lost in the color of the substrate.

The first fundamental element of fabric printing is to understand the chemistry in the process. First off, there is no silver bullet. There is no single ink type that will adequately print to all fiber types in a simple, one step process. It’s unfortunate, but this is the reality and it means we must understand how different types of fibers interact with the available ink choices. 

Currently, the available inkjet inks for fabric printing include:

Each ink has specific fiber types to which it will properly bond. Reactive dyes and textile pigments are commonly used for natural fibers like cotton. Disperse dyes (dye-sub inks) are reserved for polyester, while acid dyes work well with nylon and silk.
Each of the dyes requires the fabric to have a special inkjet-receptive coating to control dot gain and helps to ensure proper fixation. Many fabrics can be purchased with the coating already applied. Also, there are select sources that will apply the coating (as a service) to a fabric that you provide. Lastly, for high production scenarios, purchasing your own coating machine may be the best option.

Eco-solvent printing VS Solvent printing for Advertising

One question that most of my customers grapple with, is whether to go for a solvent or eco solvent print. To be able to make this choice, you first need to understand the difference between the two.

Eco solvent inks have the colors suspended in a mild bio-degradable solvent. These inks have little or no odor. The machines using these inks typically print at very high resolutions. The ink heads have nozzles which can spray ink drops of size 10 picoliters or less. Obviously, with a smaller drop size one can achieve higher quality prints with very fine resolutions. Eco-solvent machines typically need specially coated media for printing upon.
The specialized ink chemistry and coated media does contribute to higher print costs. But this technology delivers beautiful photo realistic images and stunning print quality. Eco solvent prints would typically be used for indoor applications.

Solvent inks are much more aggressive and typically non bio degradable. These inks have a pungent odor and prolonged exposure to them can be harmful to humans. The stronger inks and more complex chemistry allows us to print on uncoated media or media with less coating. Also these inks are generally more resistant to water and sunlight. Solvent flex printing machines have a comparatively large drop size. The print heads on solvent machines spray ink drops of size 40 – 60 picoliters. While the larger drop size does result in slightly grainy image reproduction, it does not really matter. Because solvent prints are typically used for outdoor applications. If you are going to view a hoarding which is 40 feet distant from your car, waiting at the traffic signal, you won’t even notice the low resolution.

Several digital printing for banner printing market

As the popularity of solvent and Eco-solvent digital printers has grown, so has the demand for solvent-compatible banner media has increased. To meet these growing needs, manufacturers have introduced new banner media, which include vinyl banner material and banner fabrics.
The screen printing and dye sublimation processes do not require any special coating. Using high heat, dye sublimation prints can be fused to non-top coated polyester banner fabrics.  Many uncoated vinyl banners can also be printed with solvent and mild solvent inkjet systems, if the right profile is used.

Printer manufacturers, such as Roland DGA Corporation (Irvine, CA), had developed custom-match material profiles for both topcoated and non-topcoated substrates. Roland offers a wide variety of profiled media for use with our mild-solvent and aqueous inkjet printers.  The profiles which printer companies and material manufactures  have developed take much of the guesswork out of achieving good color on those substrates. Custom media profiles are included with Roland’s VersaWorks RIP software so customers can take full advantage of the ability to balance excellent color with lower saturation levels.
While printing on many vinyl banners can be printed without a top coating, inkjet printing directly to nylon, polyester or cotton banner fabric, however, requires a special coating.  As the digital market grew and printer technology progressed, banner manufacturer’s developed top-coated fabrics that were compatible with the inks.  Top coatings have been formulated to work with a number of digital printers using water-based, solvent, Eco-solvent and UV inkjet inks.

Wide application brought by advancement in digital print technology


Advancements in digital print technology and the introduction of top coated fabric have allowed printers to expand their product offerings to include fabric banners. These technological advancements include: the ability of the machinery to feed and process heavier weight materials; improved compatibility of the inks with fabrics; and higher print quality.
As print head technology improved, digital printers could produce smaller ink droplets, which increased the number of dots per inch, resulting in crisper images. How to solve cut heat transfer film problem?

When heat transfer films are not cutting properly, what are the possible causes and remedies?
If you are having problems cutting polyurethane heat transfer films, check the following possible causes:
Make sure that the blade is sharp. The number one reason cause of cutting problems is a dull blade. Change the blade as needed. Check to make sure that the blade isn’t broken….Even a new blade can have a broken tip.

Downforce pressure. Set cutting pressure between 60 and 80 grams for polyurethane films. When more downforce pressure is required, the blade is typically dull and should be changed. Excessive downforce pressure will cause the blade to chatter. Try reducing the setting.

Reduce the cutting speed.
Check the blade depth – as a rule of thumb it should be approximately ½ the depth of a credit card. If the blade is set too deep, it       will dig into the polyester carrier.

If you change the blade from 45⁰ to 60⁰, you must change the offset value.

Digital printing inks are similar to other inks and paints. All of these products consist of two basic components:  a colorant (dye or pigment) and a liquid carrier or vehicle.  The varieties of digital printing inks include aqueous inks, solvent inks, Eco-solvent inks, latex inks and UV-curable inks.  With so many choices available in wide format printing, considerations in ink selection include compatibility with the substrates, application, durability, brightness of color and cost.
If an application requires longevity, pigment inks are much more durable than dye-based inks. Those pigments that that fade after a short period of time are referred to as “fugitive colors”. While pigments are viewed a producing less vibrant images, improvements in ink technology has expanded the color gamut. For outdoor applications, such as vehicle graphics and outdoor advertising, pigmented inks are usually preferred.
In the digital printing field, pigment inks, however, have been associated with metameric color shifts. Advances in ink formulation have reduced many of the problems associated with metamerism. Dye-based inks, by comparison are less metameric.
The advantage of a dye-based ink is its bright colors. For this reason, these inks were selected for indoor applications, such as P.O.P. posters and displays and photographic prints. The downside of dye-based ink was that you sacrificed durability. While fade resistance has improved greatly with new color formulations, the more vibrant dye-based inks generally exhibit a much lower resistance to UV light.
Aqueous Inks. Aqueous inks were popular in the Point-Of-Purchase industry for printing posters. Most of these inks are dye-based, although today pigment inks are also available. The dye-based inks produced very vibrant colors, which were perfect for indoor applications. Printed images are quite often very close to photographic quality, which is why photographers have preferred these printers to output their work. The shortcomings of the dye-based inks were that their durability was limited and not suitable for outdoor applications. In addition, print media required top coatings to achieve good image reproduction and ensure good adhesion to substrates, such as vinyl films.

UV (Ultra-Violet) printing is a digital inkjet printing technology similar to sublimation. In the same way as sublimation printing, you can design the graphics without any color limitations. But remember, sublimation Ink will only work on 100% polyester fabrics or hard items like mugs that are coated with a durable clear polyester coating. On the other hand, UV-LED Printing can directly print on almost any material without coating or primer.
One major difference between UV-LED Printing and sublimation is that once the image is printed, the UV-LED light will soon cure it, therefore, the finished product can be used immediately. Whereas in sublimation, the transfer process of the image is complex, and maybe exhausting. Besides heat pressing is needed to cure the inks.

For Sublimation, printing on clear or dark substrates/backgrounds can be quite a challenge. On the contrary, UV-LED printers makes this process easy with its CMYK ink set along with a white and clear ink. The white ink component allows you to print a base coat of white ink underneath the color image. This is needed when you may be printing to a clear or a dark material. The clear ink component in UV Printer allows you to print a clear coat over your graphic; It gives a glossy appearance and more durability.
Sublimation is a single layer printing process. But UV printer can perform multilayer printing at the same time. The layered printing can produce raised images, texts and 3D effects. This creates textured finish that can be developed in several applications, such as printing a duplicate textured oil painting. Furthermore, it can be helpful in creating ADA signage along with printed ADA-compliant Braille signage.

Other advantages to consider with UV-LED Printing such as printing speed. These printers can perform much faster compared to sublimation process.

UV printing can be used to print on a wide variety of substrates of all colors, textures, shapes and sizes. It can also print on cylindrical or rounded objects like bottles. UV printing isn’t a replacement for sublimation or any other process, but a smart quick alternative to perform almost any job.

How to clean sublimated garments?

Garments decorated with sublimation heat transfer will withstand washing and drying twenty times and more, if they are cared for properly. Reviewing the right way to wash, dry and iron garments decorated with heat transfers.
I am frequently asked how many times you can wash a garment with a heat transfer applique before it deteriorates. Durability of this material all depends on the type of material that you are using and garment care. If you wash and dry the garment properly, a high quality polyurethane applique should last just as long as the garment itself.
Nothing shortens the life of a heat transfer graphic faster than improper washing and drying of the garment. To ensure optimal durability, you should follow the few simple rules that I have listed below. 
Washing Garments with Heat Transfers.
Washing garments decorated with heat transfer appliques involves a little more than separating white garments from colored fabrics:
• To protect the heat transfer applique from abrasion as garments rub together during the wash cycle, turn the garment inside out. 
• Before washing, wait 24 hours after heat transfer application. 
• Wash the garment at low or warm water temperature settings. Refer to the washing instructions on the garment label and the product application guide for the heat transfer material. In the ideal world, like fabrics should be separated and washed together.
• Use a mild detergent. Never use chlorine bleach.
• NOTE: Do not dry clean flex materials. It is OK to dry clean flock materials. 
Drying Garments with Heat Transfers.
The high heat in driers can cause much more damage to heat applied graphics than washing.To prevent heat damage to appliques, follow these tips:
• To protect the image from abrasion as garments rub against each other, turn it inside out.
• Tumble dry on the low temperature setting. (So clothes can actually tumble as they dry, never overstuff the drier. This practice will also minimize wrinkles.)
• Don’t overdry your clothes. Remove clothes from the dryer while they are slightly damp. Put clothes on hangers for final drying. Better yet, hang your clothes to dry on an old-fashioned clothes line. (Do not hang garments outside in the sun to dry or the UV light will accelerate the fading process.)
IRONING GARMENTS WITH HEAT TRANSFERS. 
When ironing a garment decorated with a heat transfer polyurethane graphic, turn the garment inside out or cover the graphic with cotton cloth. If a hot iron touches the polyurethane film, it will melt the film, ruining the graphics!

Which width of rotary heat transfer machine suitable for your sublimation printing business?

The width of a rotary heat press machine is usually stated at 1.7 meter or 68”, then 2.6 meter or 100” and up to 3.2 meter or 130” wide. The actual heat press is much larger, with this being the drum width and approximate nomex belt width. Our Sublistar oil filled drum heat press machine come in a variety of configurations that meet entry level, middle level and extremely large volume requirements. Our machine production line covers the 1.2m and 1.7m entry level with an 200mm diameter of oil filled heat press drum. Belt widths are slightly larger on these and they are quite affordable, costing about 1/2 less than most presses on the market. The oil filled drum rotary heat press offers more uniformity and consistency than the IR or electric heat type. If you are serious about quality, then oil press rotary heat transfer machine is the choice.

Multi-function versions run in the 1.7 meter or 1.9m, then 2.6 meter or 100” and up to 3.2 meter or 130” wide on the RTR or roll to roll larger unit, including auto feeding system, automatic adjusting device prevents blanket deviate while working, one inflatable shaft ensures putting cloth and paper with no excusion.

Sizes of oil filled drums in the more industrial strength versions run from 420mm, 600mm, 800mm and 1 meter sizes.
